somethings in the basement !

monster in the basement

When I was a little girl the basement was a scarey place.

Each stair was just a step without a back, so I thought that if you were small enough, you could slip right through.

Mothers sewing room was in the very back of the house.  A large and stark room with concrete block walls and a concrete floor.

During the day, it was no problem going downstairs for any reason in the world, but at night…. Ooh, that was a different subject.  I mean, to walk quickly might cause me to go through the back of the stairs and fall to my death, but if I didn’t run…. that evil thing that lived in the basement might attack!  It was such a dilemna in my life!

Sometimes Mom did minor alterations upstairs while we all watched tv.  There were many occasions when she would realize that she had forgotten something and needed that something to complete her work.  The next thing I would hear was,  “Becky, go get my seam ripper from the drawer of the sewing cabinet please.”  Oh no!  “MOM!  I don’t want to go, can’t you take a break and run down and get it ?”.  She would just laugh and say, “Nothing is going to get you, silly!”  But she just didn’t know!  Then she would say, “Just go turn the lights on before you start down, then wait til you get to the top of the stairs before you turn them off.  If you see anything, or anyone that’s not suppose to be here, hollar.”, oh I was gonna hollar alright!  I figured I’d scream so loud the neighbors would hear, and they would come save me! I would reluctantly run down the stairs as Mom would hollar, “Don’t fall!” down the stairs

Oh God!  What if I do fall?  What if I fell on that concrete floor and died!  It was a horrilbe situation I am in right at this moment.  I will either be kidnapped and attacked by the evil troll from the basement or fall to my death. What was I to do?  Why would my Mom send me to my death!

But hence, nothing happend.  I know you knew I would say that.  I never fell to my death, and no one ever kidnapped or attacked me.

But, then there was that monster under my bed!monster under my bedNow, that concrete block sewing room is my studio!

There are no boogie men!  No evil lurking in the dark.  Just my art equipment, my sewing machine and all my creative implements for creations.  Oh, and Mom’s sewing machine.  And, her seam ripper.

getting started is half the battle

getting started…. Where do I start?

Some of you may already know this, but just in case…. I moved in with my Dad  July 1st after my Mom passed away.

I came back to Georgia after living in Nashville, TN for 27 years.  Leaving behind not only dear, dear friends but also my grown children.  Both of my children consider Nashville their home town even though neither was born there.

It has taken me 3 1/2 weeks to get my art studio the way I want it.  Well, everything but artwork on the walls.  I’m still waiting to hang stuff. It has been months since my creative juices flowed.  I don’t  remember what month I completed my last piece of art work.  It was probably April, or maybe March.  No, I’m pretty sure it was April.

It is true that I have been in a state of some depression, which always causes problems with creativity.  But, in light of the fact that I have worked diligently to turn my art into a career, I have been concerned that I needed to get down here in this new studio and be creative.  I may not be able to create anything that I feel is sales worthy, but it is important to start creating.

OMG!

My daughter was recently in Chicago and took a photo of the sunrise over the Great Lakes.  I decided this photo would be an excellent one to start with. There wasn’t an enormous amount of articulate detail work, so this would be great.  Ha!  There it sits on my painting table.

Then, when I realized that this was not going to be something I wanted to work on at this point, I found the garden apron I made back in the fall.  This apron was humongous.  I thought a family of clowns would fit comfortably into my apron.  Garden apron

See, I told you it was ginormous!

I started altering the seams on the side to make it a better fit.  I worked on it for a couple of days.  Once I felt it was of a more appropriate size, I decided to tie-dye it.  I thought it would make a aesthetically more appealing appearance. my disclaimer… I have tie-dyed before very successfully.

shattered dreams splitting seams

OH LOrd!  Look what I did!

ruined!  RUINED!

all that work I put into this apron, and it’s “Ruined!”

( the tie-dye was a complete failure)

UGH!

So, I got this bright idea that I would find something to draw!  Draw, I can do that!  Well, I found another seascape, and I started working on it.  Ugh! barely started

I don’t know how this got so messy, but it did and then I got frustrated. I just really don’t know what I’m gonna do?

I guess I’m gonna go back to my studio tomorrow and I’m going to pick myself up, dust myself off and start all over again!

Snaps?

purse

My new purse I’m working on…..

I’m now at the place where you add some type of closure to the opening.  I decided the best way to do this was to buy some snap pliers and add snaps.  HA!

This is what snaps look like, I know you probably know this already, but I added just for reference…

snap3snap 3 after adding the back snap, I didn’t notice that I had stripped some of the side… so I continued…..snap2 It would be pretty damn hard not to notice this faux paux!

I got my screw driver and I somehow managed to remove them without tearing my fabric….. I snapped again…..

snap2 snap 3 Lordy!

I called my Mom, who was always a very talented seamstress in the day.  Before she decided she was too old to sew…

She said she didn’t know what to tell me, she had never used pliers, but some other device that worked perfectly.

Well, I wanted to finish my purse yesterday to go on in my Etsy Shop, https://www.etsy.com/people/AllBeckysCreations, but I can’t now because I’m waiting til I go to my parents house at Thanksgiving and go with Mom to the fabric store to purchase one of these perfect snap attach machines or get her to do it!

I got so flustered yesterday, I had to sit in the den and watch HGTV til dinner.  Ugh!

It’s a learning experience,  right?  I spent a lot of money on those pliers…. If you know how to use them and need a pair, give me an address and I’ll mail them to you.  I’m afraid the snaps are up to you, I ruined all the ones I bought.

Give Thanks! (better late than never)

??????????

It’s gonna be Thanksgiving soon!  Wow!  My life is flying, and I’m trying to catch up…  Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t!

My newest addition to the Etsy Shop  www.etsy.com/allbeckyscreations.

I Love the sentiment in these two words.  Something to ponder during the Holidays, but also every day of our lives.  We should always give thanks for all the good in our lives and in the lives of those we love and care for.

I should have started these earlier, like before Halloween.  But, hence that is not when I started.  I promise that I am not a procrastinator, but it would appear so…. NOT!  No matter…… Here they are!

Each letter is painted brown with green and gold leaf.  Each is an individual letter to be hung as you like.

I will be adding a self designed purse soon.  I’ve just begun to work on this purse, normally they do not take this long, but since I have no pattern to use…. just doing it as I go.  (Eek!)  it will be a little longer.

I’ll tell you what pattern I’ve been using and it must come to a halt!  Procrastination….. I always get this way around the Holidays…. I don’t know why, because I love this time of year.  I have always had a sneaky suspension that it has something to do with not wanting it to come so fast.  My life use to not go by so fast.  I think it would work better if it just wouldn’t do this.  As we get older, we should be able to savor each and every moment.  Well, we can savor these moments, if we can catch up with the moments that are flying by!

SchroederintreeIt’s gonna be here before I know it!  And, I love it so I’m glad it is…..

Opium Poppy

??????????

My latest paper mache letter – “O”

I saw an Opium Poppy for the first time recently. These flowers have such delicate petals of pink, red, orange and purple. Just had to paint them on a letter. So, what better letter than the “O”. The stamen is such a contrast from the petals, the flower just pops with color!
This paper mache letter is 8 inches.

Since I have decided not to sell my “P”.  Mainly because I am not to happy about it.  I have almost worked my way through the alphabet.

I must admit that I do have a time taking pictures that are light enough.  I tried taking several pictures of this “O”, but this is the best…. and yet a little dark.  ??????????

I took this one outside, but hence…. still a little too dark.  Ahhh, maybe not.  What do you think?  I’d love to hear.

So here are my letters, from A – O and maybe the P, but it will not be going in my Etsy shop.  http://www.etsy.com/AllBeckysCreations

I thought this was a real cute idea, I painted lace on the very large letter in the couples favorite colors and attached white flowers in the bend.

On to a special item, I hope in time for Thanksgiving…..

????????????????????

(I’m really wondering how still I have to stand to keep some of these photos from being so blurry. )

Thank you for letting me get that off my chest.

These are my two newest letters

“M” – 8″ paper mache letter.  Morning Glory…. ( I actually think my best friend Michele plans to scarf this up, but I wanted to show it any hoot. )

“N” – 12″ wooden letter.  Naughty or Nice….  I really enjoyed doing this one.

I am working on my “O” now.  I’m going with a Opium Poppy for the subject.  I very pretty flower that I think will make a lovely subject matter.

??????????

“P” – Paper was my subject.  A collage of craft paper, paper dolls, algebra books ( didn’t see any reason to not use them, won’t be needing them any longer myself!)  Ha!  I also threw a couple of photos of Shirley Temple in there.

I actually created the “P” a while back, but decided that since I wasn’t staying in sequence with the letters I would wait until I got to the M,N,O before showing it.  Okay, I have skipped over “O”, but only for a short time.

George’s new bed

During summer break I decided to start taking some sewing lessons.  My first project was a dog bed for George, my Cockerpoo.   I have attached a couple of videos I made of my introduction of this bed to George.  Not the happy ending I was hoping for.  But, it made for a hilarious video that I will cherish.

I also have a cat named Schroeder.  He is the baby of the family and never ceases to tickle me. Enough said……

At least someone will enjoy it.

Lollipops, Oh Lolli Lollipops
